Meet Mildred.
Mildred Atkinson Council is a lifelong public servant, community organizer, and advocate for families, health, and education in Pitt County. A graduate of Shaw University and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, she devoted 32 years to the NC Department of Health and Human Services, specializing in genetic counseling, sickle cell disease, and infant mortality.
Her public service career spans nearly three decades, including 22 years on the Greenville City Council—serving three terms as Mayor Pro-Tem—and six years on the Pitt County Board of Education, where she retired as Chair. Mildred has also held leadership roles with the North Carolina League of Municipalities, the National League of Cities, and the North Carolina Black Elected Municipal Officials.
Honored for her lifetime of leadership, she has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the Colors of Change Ella Baker Award, the City of Greenville Human Relations Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and recognition as an HBCU Living Legend. A proud Shaw University alumna and historian, Mildred continues to serve through her church, civic organizations, and scholarship programs, leaving a legacy of faith, leadership, and love for her community.
